Aug 02, 2005 SEXING OF FIREBELLY FROGS (Bombina)

FIREBELLY FROG MALE

For many years the gender of frogs in the Genus Bombina (Firebelly Frogs) has been a mystery. Recently, good information had become available. A world renowned frog breeder in the UK, Andrew Tillson-Willis, has provided us information on how to sex these popular frogs.

FIREBELLY FROG FEMALE

He says "once you know what to look for sexing is very easy, males have very thick forelimbs in comparison to females, also there are differences in the webbing of the hind feet, males webbing normaly reaches to the tips of the toes but females stops half way."

NUPTIAL PADS

If you look closely at the images you will see exactly what Andrew is talking about. Males have the thickened "forearms" and "nuptial calluses". The females lack these characters. Also, partially visible in the images is the male female differences in the hind foot webbing. Check it out!

We hope this helps.
